La galleria è stata fondata nel 1999 a Catania. Fin dall’inizio, la sua attività è stata dedicata a una esplorazione sistematica e coerente delle più recenti e sperimentali forme di ricerca nelle arti visive – fotografia, video, performance, Net-art. I progetti realizzati sono stati sempre concepiti nell’intento di rompere con culture visive superate e proporre la ricerca più innovativa. Questo orientamento è stato perseguito con una programmazione sistematica spesso sviluppata per serie considerevolmente lunghe di rassegne, come negli oltre 24 mesi di DUETTI – una manifestazione comprendente 12 esposizioni di due artisti italiani o stranieri, tutte presentate da curatori professionali: fra gli altri, Antonio Arévalo; Aurora Fonda; Gianluca Marziani; Daniele Perra; Raffaele Gavarro; Massimo Bignardi. Due serie successive (INSIDE OUT e SLANG) si sono incentrate principalmente su mostre di maestri maturi a confronto con giovani emergenti e sulla performance. Nel 2006 Arte Contemporanea ha realizzato ARTE & SUD obiettivo contemporaneo, una rassegna di oltre cinquanta giovani artisti curata da Arévalo e patrocinata da tredici Comuni italiani aderenti al GAI e ospitata in due siti storico-monumentali siciliani (www.arteesud.it - Teknemedia). Negli ultimi anni, l’attività si è sostanzialmente internazionalizzata, con due partecipazioni della direttrice Rosa Anna Musumeci al Festival internazionale d’arte contemporanea Tina-b. (Praga – Cz). Le sezioni e i 26 artisti interessati (2007 - ISLANDS UNDER THREAT; 2008 – DARKNESS IS NOON sono visibili su catalogo e in web (www.tina-b.com). Nel 2008, inoltre, è stato presentata una maxi installazione dell’artista Fabio Niccolini al Theatre de Chaillot – Parigi, nel corso della mostra VIVA LAS VEGAS, curata da Bruno Duchemin. Nel corso del 2009, la galleria ha partecipato ad ArtO', Roma, e KUNSTART09, Bolzano e ospitato una performance di Loredana Longo in occasione della V Giornata del Contemporaneo promossa da AMACI (ottobre – Catania).
Attualmente, ARTECONTEMPORANEA dispone di uno spazio a Bruxelles (Rue des Chevaliers 22 – 1050 Ixelles), nel quale darà pieno impulso alle sue missioni: promuovere giovani artisti, affermati o emergenti, a cura di critici autorevoli e di ricerca; sviluppare lo scambio internazionale e la sinergia di idee creative; intensificare la collaborazione e il mutuo sostegno di enti ed iniziative pubblici e privati nel contesto delle istituzioni comunitarie; assicurare una continua offerta di informazione ed eventi rivolti ad ampliare l’udienza della ricerca visiva; fornire consulenza e formazione ad artisti e curatori nel corso di residenze presso la sua sede. Lo spazio sarà inaugurato il 19 marzo 2010 da CAGES, una personale di Loredana Longo curata da Antonio Arévalo
The gallery opened in 1999 in Catania. Through its lifetime, it has intensely and consistently explored and promoted the newest and most experimental research experiences in contemporary visual arts, including photography, video, performance, and the Net-art. The projects were often conceived and realized to challenge old-fashioned visual cultures and attitudes with radically alternative styles of research. This aim was pursued through a systematic planning often articulated in quite long series of art projects, or reviews, e.g. the more than biennial DUETTI, twelve exhibitions each one showing a couple of Italian and/or foreign artists, all introduced by professional curators. Among the latter, Antonio Arévalo; Aurora Fonda; Gianluca Marziani; Daniele Perra; Raffaele Gavarro; Massimo Bignardi. The two following series (INSIDE OUT and SLANG) were mainly devoted to challenging pairings of established masters and new entrants, as well as to performance. In 2006, ARTECONTEMPORANEA realized ARTE & SUD obiettivo contemporaneo, a collective exhibition of more than fifty young artists sponsored by 13 Italian municipalities enrolled in the GAI (Young Italian Artists) network. The exhibition took place within two monumental public spaces in Aci Castello (CT) (www.arteesud.it), Teknemedia). In 2007 and 2008, most of the gallery’s activity was devoted to the promotion of the Italian visual research Abroad: under Rosa Anna Musumeci’s curatorship, ARTE CONTEMPORANEA brought a total of 26 artists at the sections ISLANDS UNDER THREAT (2007) and DARKNESS IS NOON (2008) of the international Prague art festival TINA B. (www.tina-b.com). In 2008, VIVA LAS VEGAS (Palais de Chaillot, Paris), a special event curated by Bruno Duchemin, presented a full size installation by the gallery’s artist Fabio Niccolini. Through 2009, the gallery has been involved in the ArtO' Fair in Rome and KUNSTART 09, Bolzano, and has presented a performance by Loredana Longo during the V Giornata del Contemporaneo sponsored by AMACI (October – Catania)
ARTECONTEMPORANEA runs presently a new space in Brussels (Rue des Chevaliers 22 – 1050 Ixelles), with the aim of pushing ahead the gallery’s basic mission: to promote young artists, either established or not, under the lead of renowned and research-oriented curators; to foster the international exchange and cross-fertilization of ideas; to develop cooperation and mutual support with Italian public and private institutions within the EU context; to create a continuous supply of information and initiatives devoted to widen the audience of contemporary visual research; to provide assistance and training to artists and curators through residential stages at its venue. The space will be opened on March, 19, 2010 by CAGES, a solo show of Loredana Longo curated by Antonio Arévalo.
